SENATOBIA – A pair of dominant outings from
Parker Stinnett and
Dalton Fowler, along with a combined 16 hits, helped No. 20 Northwest to a pair of run-rule victories against Mississippi Delta and Coahoma at Jim Miles Field on Thursday afternoon.
The two opposing teams also met earlier in the day, with Coahoma taking a 15-5 victory in that matchup.
Northwest improved to 11-3 overall with the sweep and will enjoy a brief break before traveling to Southwest Mississippi for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, March 14 at 2/5 p.m.
GAME 1 – #20 Northwest 10, Mississippi Delta 0 (5 inn.)
Freshman ace Stinnett (3-1) pitched an abbreviated no-hitter, striking out eight batters - including seven of the last 10 he faced - Northwest collected nine hits in a quick 10-0 victory against Mississippi Delta.
Northwest got three runs in the bottom of the first, as
Hammer Franks got the scoring going with his two-run single through the right side.
Garrett Riggs would drive in another off his RBI-groundout to make it a 3-0 advantage.
Six runs in the second inning broke the game open for the Rangers, as RBI base hits from
Tucker Richmond and
Tanner Leggett were followed by a three-run homer from
Ben Van Cleve to push the Northwest lead to 9-0.
Brayland Skinner's RBI-double to left center in the third inning would be the only other run the Rangers would get, but Stinnett mowed down the Mississippi Delta batters, preserving the 10-0 lead for the five-inning run-rule.
Leggett and Richmond went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Rangers, with Leggett knocking in two RBIs.
Kellen Spann got the loss for the Trojans, giving up seven earned runs in 1.1 innings of action.
GAME 2 – #20 Northwest 11, Coahoma 1
An RBI-single to Colton Yearwood in the top of the second was one of the few blemishes against the freshman lefty Fowler (2-0), as the Arlington, Tenn. native struck out seven with two hits and no earned runs allowed in the Rangers' 11-1 win against Coahoma.
Despite going down with two early outs in the bottom of the first, Northwest still managed three runs in the inning, all thanks to
Tanner Booth's three-run homer to left field.
After Coahoma made it 3-1 in the top of the second, the Rangers scored two more in the bottom of the frame with RBI-singles from Leggett and Van Cleve to make it a 5-1 advantage.
Franks helped keep the runs coming in the third, as his sac fly to center scored
Bradley Smith from third.
Northwest would put the game away for good in the fourth inning, scoring five runs off
Blake Miller's RBI-groundout, Leggett's two-run double and Franks' two-run single through the right side, pushing the Rangers to their final lead of 11-1.
Coahoma would get a single in the top of the fifth but were unable to keep the game alive, as Fowler delivered two strikeouts and a flyout to first base to seal the five-inning victory for Northwest.
Northwest finished with seven hits in the win, five of which came from Booth (3-for-3) and Leggett (2-for-4).
Rafael Hiraldo picked up the loss for Coahoma, lasting only two-thirds of an inning with four walks and three earned runs.
