SENATOBIA – Sophomore defender
Samantha Weinberg will get the chance to continue her playing career at the next level after signing with Mississippi University for Women on Friday morning.
"She didnt get the playing time she wanted as a freshman in the fall," Northwest head women's soccer coach
Levi Nunnally said. "(But) she came in and worked really hard last spring and earned a well-deserved scholarship. We were hoping her sophomore year would turn out a little different but injuries did plague her and prevent her from doing that. She's deserving of this opportunity to play for Jack Byrd at The W and I know that she will do well there."
Weinberg played in seven matches last season before having her sophomore campaign cut short due to a season-ending ACL tear. She logged a career-high 46 minutes of action in a September loss to Holmes, just before her injury.
As a freshman, the Olive Branch native saw action in nine matches as a reserve defender and helped the Lady Rangers to 10 shutouts, an 11-6 overall record and a trip to the MACJC semifinals.
Off the field, Weinberg collected MACJC and NJCAA All-Academic Team selections as well as President's and Vice President's List honors.
Weinberg becomes the third member of the Lady Ranger soccer program to sign at the next level this year, following
Angel Hailey (ULM) and
Angelica Justice (Faulkner University).
Located in Columbus, MUW recently resurrected its athletic programs and competes in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA). Weinberg will join several former Lady Rangers at The W, including
Mary Catherine Hutchens,
Mackenzie Fennell and
Alayna Brechin.
