SCOOBA – Paced by sophomore
David Herrington's 7-for-10 evening with eight RBIs and a complete-game from
Harrison Sandridge in the opener, Northwest knocked off 18th-ranked East Mississippi 22-1 and 6-4 to sweep a twinbill at Gerald Poole Field Wednesday night.
Northwest stretched its win streak to eight games in the series and improved to 14-8 overall, 2-2 in MACJC play, while EMCC fell to 9-7 and 0-4 in league action.
The Rangers exploded for a season-high 22 runs and 19 hits to run-rule the Lions in seven innings to open the day, scoring at least two runs in every inning but the first.
Aided by seven Lion errors, Northwest led 9-0 after four and never let up.
Dakota Dailey's two-run single in the second opened the scoring and eight other Rangers had at least one hit and one RBI in the lopsided win.
Herrington's third home run of the year into the bullpen in right set the tone for his big night as he finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 5-for-6 with eight RBIs.
Hunter White and
Aaron Campbell each went 3-for-6.
Sandridge (3-0) was superb again on the mound, scattering 10 hits, one run (unearned) and a career-high 10 strikeouts.
Knotted at 4-4 in the fourth in the nightcap, Northwest and EMCC went scoreless the next four frames before the Rangers rallied in the ninth for the sweep.
After a pair of singles from Dailey and
Jack McClure, Herrington was hit by pitch to load the bases. Campbell was then plunked to plate the eventual game-winning run and
Bailey Nix followed with a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-4 Rangers.
Drew Hurst (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win with a scoreless seventh and eighth to help setup
J.G. Lipscomb for his fifth save of the year and sixth of his career. Lipscomb retired the Lions in order on a pair of groundouts and struck out Wesley Leamon to end it.
Northwest will host top-ranked Jones County on Friday in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
