Rangers Walk Off Twice to Sweep Mississippi Delta

SENATOBIA – Jim Miles Field was the site of some extra inning magic on Tuesday afternoon as Northwest swept Mississippi Delta 4-3 in 13 innings and 10-9 in nine innings, winning both games in walk-off fashion.

Northwest stretched its winning streak to six while improving to 18-10 overall and 10-6 in MACJC play. Mississippi Delta fell to 18-11-1 and 5-7 in the conference.

(Game 1) Tied at three apiece in the 13th inning of play, Northwest took advantage of a Ryan Skalnik double and then a throwing error after Aaron Campbell's sac bunt, which allowed Hunter Bishop to score from third, sealing the 4-3 victory.

Northwest broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth off Cody Cooper's two-run homer that sailed over the left field wall. The home run was Cooper's third of the season and allowed the Rangers to take a 2-0 lead.

Mississippi Delta responded immediately in the top of the fifth as the Trojans' Austin Ashley scored off Clay LaBeff's RBI-single up the middle, cutting the Rangers' lead to 2-1. Ayreon Davis then tied things up for the Trojans in the sixth by stealing third and then advancing home on an error.

Northwest got a run back in the bottom of the seventh as a throwing error allowed Jamell Newson to score and put the Rangers back on top at 3-2. With two outs in the ninth, the Trojans forced extra innings by scoring on a passed ball to tie the contest at 3-3. The score would remain tied until the 13th when Northwest completed the walk-off victory.

J.R. Miller (3-2) was credited with the win in six innings of relief, giving up just one hit, an unearned run and a walk while striking out eight Delta batters. Dalton Minton also had a solid outing in the first seven innings of play, fanning a career-high eight Delta batters and giving up five hits on two runs and three walks.

Newson was the only Ranger with multiple hits in Game 1, finishing 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.

(Game 2) After Northwest led 9-0 following the fourth inning, Mississippi Delta came back once again to force extra innings, only to have the Rangers win 10-9 on Tanner Lloyd's bases loaded hit-by-pitch in the ninth inning.

Hunter Bishop got things started for the Rangers in the ninth with a single to short. Northwest was then able to load the bases off Cody Cooper's hit-by-pitch and Jamell Newson's intentional walk, setting up the winning play.

Northwest led 5-0 after a big third inning, which was highlighted by Cody Cooper's RBI-triple that scored both Ryan Skalnik and Cooper after a throwing error from right field. Mississippi Delta finished with a total of three errors in the inning, with runs scoring on two of the three.

Northwest continued to build its lead in the fourth as the Rangers plated four runs, started by Skalnik's two-run homer to left field. David Herrington followed with a two RBI-single to the shortstop that allowed Cooper and Bishop to score and extend the Northwest lead to 9-0.

Mississippi Delta then stormed back in a big way, scoring eight runs off five hits in the top of the fifth to cut the Northwest lead to 9-8. The Trojans would again force extra innings in the seventh, with Austin Ashley's RBI-double into left center tying the contest at 9-9 until the Rangers' walk-off hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the ninth.

Hunter Lacefield improved to 2-0 on the mound, tossing 4.1 innings of relief and giving up a run on two hits while striking out five batters. Jonathan Lindsey started on the mound for the Rangers and went 4.1 innings while surrendering four runs on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Northwest finished with 12 hits, including two each from Skalnik, Newson and LeeMarcus Boyd. Six more Rangers finished with a hit each.

Mississippi Delta finished with seven errors in the contest and a total of 11 in the two-game sweep.
