Dyersburg State Sweeps Northwest in Midweek Twinbill

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Northwest had its season-long eight-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday afternoon at USA Stadium, dropping a non-conference twinbill to Dyersburg State by 10-3 and 12-4 finals.

Dyersburg improved to 25-9 overall while Northwest, receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll, fell to 20-12.

Free passes led to the demise of the Rangers on Tuesday, issuing 18 combined walks and hit-by-pitches. Nine of those Eagles came around to score.

(Game 1) DSCC broke open a 3-1 game with seven runs over the final two innings and used a three-hit afternoon from the No. 9 hitter Christian Acklin to take a 10-3 win in the opener.

Ryan Skalnik's RBI-single down the left field line scored LeeMarcus Boyd to cut the Eagles' deficit to 2-1 after three frames.

Devin Orr tossed two solid innings to keep it a 3-1 game, allowing two hits and an unearned run.

Things quickly changed for the Rangers, however, in the later half of the sixth and into the seventh. Austin Towles was hit hard, allowing seven runs off nine hits, as the Eagles put the game out of reach.

Northwest got two runs back in its final at-bat, scoring off a wild pitch and an error to make the final 10-3.

DSCC out-hit Northwest 13-6 in the opener. Cody Purvis (2-0) went four innings and allowed one run off six hits to earn the win while Brady Jones tossed the final three frames to earn the save.

(Game 2) Northwest took its first and only lead of the day in the third on Hunter Wilson's two-out, RBI-single but the Eagles threw up a five spot in the fourth, four more in the sixth and three in the seventh for a lopsided 12-4 win.

J.R. Miller drew his first start of the year and tossed three scoreless innings of one-hit ball, leaving with a 1-0 lead.

DSCC's five runs in the fourth all came with two outs, chasing Connor McGraw after two-thirds of an inning for Dalton Minton. Walks, hit-by-pitches and an error led to the big inning for DSCC.

Northwest scratched across single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and got back to within 5-3 before the wheels fell off. Base running miscues ran the Rangers out of two of those innings.

Grant Hawkins was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored in the leadoff spot for the Eagles as part of an 11-hit game. Skalnik was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Northwest.

Northwest will host Gulf Coast on Sunday, April 17 (was Saturday) at 2 p.m. at Jim Miles Field.
