SENATOBIA – Down a goal within the closing minutes of regulation, Northwest used a pair of goals from freshman
Lance Crabtree to solidify a 2-1 comeback victory in double overtime against Southwest Mississippi on Tuesday.
With the win, Northwest improved to 9-4-1 on the season. Southwest fell to 4-6-1 overall with the loss.
After a scoreless first half of play, the Bears hit the scoreboard first thanks to a goal from Jonathan Schmaltz off an assist from Phillip Mallet. The goal gave Southwest a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute of the second half.
Aggressive attacks late in regulation helped the Rangers tie the match, as
Robert Mims connected with Crabtree for his team-leading 12th goal of the season in the 85th minute, sending the match into overtime.
Neither team was able to score in the first overtime period. But a Southwest foul during
Cameron Casey's header attempt drew a yellow card and setup Crabtree's penalty kick goal in the 102nd minute, sealing the Rangers' 2-1 victory.
Sophomore
Matthew Williams was big between the posts for the Rangers, tying his career-high mark of 11 saves this season.
Northwest will return to north division play next Tuesday at Holmes (4-5, 1-2). Kick is set for 4 p.m. in Ridgeland.
