Sam Small to Workout for CFL's Edmonton Eskimos

MEMPHIS – Middle linebacker Sam Small, a former Ranger and two-year starter at Murray State, will work out for the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League on Saturday, March 14 at Memphis University School.

Small was a two-year starter at Northwest during the 2009-10 seasons for head coach Ricky Woods, helping the Rangers to a combined 15-4 record (10-2 north), including a 9-1 finish, north division championship and No. 9 final ranking by the NJCAA in 2010.

Small was an NJCAA Second Team All-American, all-region and all-state selection as a sophomore after recording a team-high 91 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks, five interceptions and 12 passes defended. He was also selected to play in the MACJC All-Star Football Classic at season's end. As a freshman, Small recorded 61 tackles, second-best on the team.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound product of Winona finished his career at Murray State, recording a team-high 115 tackles, 9.5 tackles-for-loss, 1.5 sacks and a quarterback hurry as a junior en route to Second Team All-OVC honors. Small redshirted the 2012 season with an injury but was a preseason All-OVC selection.

Entering his senior year in 2013, Small was rated the No. 18 Linebacker by Phil Steele in his Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) preseason position rankings. He ended the year with 76 tackles (2nd on the team), 3.0 tackles-for-loss and half a sack as a senior and team captain.

Small is attempting to join a long list of former Rangers to continue their careers in professional football.
