Kostmayer's Golden Goal Gives Rangers OT Win

Box Score SENATOBIA – With 1:15 left in double overtime and the match headed for a draw, freshman Matthew Kostmayer beat Bryant Boyington to give Northwest the golden goal in a 2-1 victory over Southwest Friday afternoon.

Northwest improved to 3-1 on the year, all one-goal wins, while Southwest dropped to 0-3-1.

Kostmayer appeared to score the game-winner in the 88th minute when his back heel flip went over the keeper, hit the crossbar and bounced over the line. But the referee ruled no goal and the match went into extra time.

Saul Lopez gave Southwest a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute off a Denver Bankston assist and Amadou Dia knotted it at 1-1 for Northwest in the 29th minute from Kostmayer.

The score stayed that way the ensuing 80 minutes until the game-winner at the 108:45-mark.

Northwest out-shot Southwest 27-17 and earned eight corners against five for Southwest. Both Josh Delgado and Boyington had nice afternoons with eight saves apiece in net.

Northwest will open MACJC North Division play on Friday, Sept. 5 at Itawamba.
