SENATOBIA - Following a hard fought 90 minutes on the pitch, the Northwest Mississippi Community College men's soccer team (4-4-2) fall 2-0 to the #5 Jones College Bobcats (9-0-1) at the Ranger Soccer Complex in Senatobia.
"Jones is a good team. We knew that coming in, and they put their chances away" Head Coach Windham Whatley said. "Hats off to our boys for the fight they put in and changing the system that we haven't done before."
From kickoff, it was obvious that NWCC had a plan to play with a sound defense, and this plan worked until the 11th minute when the Rangers committed a foul in the penalty area and Stanley Georgiou buried the resulting penalty kick.
After the penalty kick, the Rangers' defense and freshman goalkeeper TJay Gibb were able to fend off several chances to keep the game at only a 1-0 deficit going into the half time break.
Northwest saw a flurry of offensive opportunities at the beginning of the second half. However, none of the opportunities resulted in a Ranger landing on the scoresheet.
Once again, the Rangers' defense and Gibb stood tall until the 87th minute when Mario Novaku ripped a shot from around 35 yards out.
Although Northwest did not get the results that they wanted, positives can still be taken from the team's performance.
"Our fight overall," Whatley said. "We didn't get the result, but there's always positives."
On Friday, September 25, the Rangers will host Holmes Community College (5-5) in yet another MACCC contest at 7 p.m. in Senatobia at the Ranger Soccer Complex.
