Rangers Earn Split in Soccer Season-Openers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SUMMIT – After a disappointing 3-2 loss to Copiah-Lincoln in the season-opener on Friday, Northwest bounced back nicely on Saturday at Southwest to earn a 2-1 win to split the weekend's season-opening matches.

Friday's loss at Co-Lin was the first-ever for the Rangers, who had won all eight previous meetings.

Northwest jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the 9th minute on Mamadou Mbaye's assisted effort from Wyatt Sacks on a free kick before Co-Lin tied it at 1-1 in the 19th minute on Camilo Posada's goal.

The Rangers would take a 2-1 lead into the half when Matthew Kostmayer's first collegiate goal at the 30:19-mark beat keeper Bailey Hart to the lower left 90. Ryan Maniccia was credited with the assist.

The lead held true for the next 34 minutes until the Wolves broke through in the 65th minute to tie it and then scored the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute.

Josh Delgado made numerous key saves to keep the Rangers in the match, four to be exact, which was controlled by Co-Lin for most of the 90 minutes. Co-Lin owned a 14-8 shot advantage, including 9-3 SOG.

After falling behind 1-0 at Southwest in the 14th minute on Saturday, Northwest responded nicely by keeping the Bears off the board the final 76 minutes and found the tying and winning goals for a 2-1 victory.

Armando Barron tied the match at 1-1 in the 26th minute, using a ball from Jacob King and dribbling around the defense for a nice finish inside the 18-yard line.

Northwest would then find the game-winner in the 71st minute when Barron sent a nice ball deep into Southwest territory and Amadou Dia cradled it and blasted it into the back of the net.

In an always physical matchup between the two teams, the game saw a combined 26 fouls, three yellow cards and two red cards.

Northwest will return home for matches on Tuesday, Aug. 26 vs Meridian and Friday, Aug. 29 vs Southwest.
