RENTON, Wash. – Former Ranger Lance Ray, a 2011 NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention, is one of 20 undrafted rookies at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center (VMAC) on a tryout basis this weekend with the defending Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks.
A 6-foot-1, 208-pound receiver/return specialist from Quincy, Fla., Ray will spend three days at the complex with a total of 59 players consisting of nine draft picks from the Seahawks' 2014 class, nine UDFAs they signed directly after, plus 11 non-rookies who are still eligible to participate (practice squad guys from last year, injured reserve guys from last year) and 20 undrafted rookies.
Ray transferred to Northwest after spending the 2009-10 seasons at Arkansas. He redshirted his true freshman season before emerging as the team's leading kick returner, averaging 22.5 yards-per-return, in 2010.
Rated the No. 59 athlete in the country by Rivals.com out of East Gadsden High School, Ray originally chose the U of A over the likes of LSU, Illinois, Ole Miss, Kentucky and Mississippi State among others.
In his lone season in Senatobia in 2011, Ray caught 37 balls for 704 yards and a team-high 12 touchdowns en route to MACJC First Team All-State and NJCAA All-Region 23 honors. He added 14 kick returns for 361 yards (25.8 avg) and two touchdowns.
Ray played his final two seasons at East Carolina as the Pirates' primary kick returner with 35 returns for 843 yards (24.1 avg) and a 90-yard touchdown. He added 32 receptions for 253 yards and three scores. He was named an All-Conference USA Honorable Mention as a senior.
Ray is one of two former Ranger undrafted rookies in camp this weekend along with Texas left tackle Donald Hawkins (Philadelphia Eagles).
