Box Score SENATOBIA – After a one-year absence, Northwest is back in the MACJC Football Playoffs.
Northwest overcame seven turnovers to edge a feisty Coahoma bunch 34-29 Thursday night at James E. Miller Stadium to improve to 4-5 overall and 4-2 in the north. The Rangers clinched the north's No. 2 seed thanks to a tiebreaker over Itawamba and will make their 25th playoff appearance in the last 33 seasons.
Justin Crawford rushed for a single-game school record 338 yards and four touchdowns on 35 carries, breaking Eldra Buckley's previous record of 278 set during the 2004 season.
Northwest forced a Coahoma turnover on the Tigers' opening possession of the game, as
Fred Garth Jr. lit up Marcel Williams and
Devante Davis returned the fumble down to the CCC 8-yard line. One play later, Crawford scored around the left side for a 7-0 lead.
Coahoma quickly answered, going 77 yards on 8 plays, capped by Gerald Lampkin's 9-yard touchdown run. Anthony Mitchell Jr.'s 49-yard strike to K'shun Evans set up the score and the PAT was no good, making it 7-6.
The Rangers responded two drives later to stretch the lead to 14-6, with Crawford racing 72 yards for a score.
Once again, Coahoma came right back when Mitchell connected with James Hill for a 31-yard touchdown strike. The drive spanned
84 yards on just five plays to pull Coahoma within 14-12 after a failed 2-point try.
Cody Spears' 27-yard field goal put Coahoma on top for the first time, 15-14, with 6:55 remaining in the half, but Crawford would score minutes later to give the Rangers a 20-15 lead at the break.Coahoma ran 52 plays for 267 yards against 21 plays for 155 for the Rangers in the first half and owned a huge edge in time of possession at 21:35-8:25.
The third quarter was filled with turnovers and the score remained 20-15 Northwest heading to the fourth.
Treston DeCoud stepped in front of a Mickey Ridley pass and returned it down to the CCC 2-yard line to start the fourth quarter, and Crawford would take it the final yard to make it 28-15 with 13:20 left. The 2-point try from
Kyle Morgan to
Jamarius Mabry was good.
CCC answered on its ensuing drive, pulling within 28-22 after an Evans 7-yard reception from Mitchell. The drive covered 75 yards on six plays.
Fumbles by Crawford on the Rangers' next two drives, including one at the CCC 1-yard line, kept the Tigers alive and within a touchdown with less than 3 minutes to play.
Coahoma, however, was stopped on four straight plays from its own 1-yard line and turned the ball over on downs which allowed
Terreous Johnson to score from 1-yard out to make it 34-22.
Just when it appeared the game was in hand, the ensuing kickoff sailed out of bounds to give CCC the ball on its own 35-yard line, and two plays later, Mitchell hit Hill from 52 yards to make it 34-29 with 44 seconds left.
Spears' onside kick attempt was unsuccessful and Northwest was finally able to run out the clock after a game that lasted over 3 hours with 12 turnovers and nearly 900 yards of offense.
The Rangers improved to 38-2 all-time against the Tigers and have won the last five overall.
Northwest will travel to No. 12 Copiah-Lincoln (7-2) on Saturday, Nov. 1 for a semifinal matchup at 3 p.m.
