Box Score SENATOBIA – For the third time in four weeks, it was the
Justin Crawford show Thursday night, with the freshman running back accounting for 431 all-purpose yards in Northwest's 23-14 win over Mississippi Delta.
With the victory, Northwest took over sole possession of second place in the north division at 3-1 (3-4 overall). Delta dropped to 3-3 and 2-2 in the division.
Delta managed just seven total yards in the first quarter, but Cedric Poole's 78-yard punt return for a touchdown gave the visiting Trojans a 7-0 lead after one.
Northwest found the equalizer on Crawford's 19-yard run seconds into the second quarter and took a 10-7 lead into the half thanks to a 24-yard field goal by
Jim Speights, his third straight make.
The Rangers outgained Delta 190-67 in the opening half and turned it on after the break.
Crawford burst into open space and raced 71 yards for a score on the Rangers' opening drive of the third quarter for a 17-7 lead but Delta answered with an 11-play, 72-yard drive to make it a 17-14 game after three.
Northwest's second drive of the fourth quarter went 78 yards on just four plays and
Kyle Morgan kept it for a QB keeper from 1-yard out for a 23-14 lead, his first career rushing touchdown. The scoring play was setup by Morgan's 71-yard strike to Crawford on a swing pass down the sideline.
Delta drove it down to the Rangers' 29-yard line with just over 7 minutes remaining trying to make it a one-score game, but
Terry Caldwell came up with a big sack on Devin Adams for a 14-yard loss to force a punt.
Northwest was able to run out the final 5:28 on the ground with Crawford to seal a third win in four weeks.
Northwest outgained Delta 443-252 on the night and held the Trojans to 3-of-13 on third down.
Morgan finished 8-of-13 for 217 yards, connecting with Crawford four times for 174 yards. Crawford added 257 yards rushing and two scores, averaging 8.6 yards-per-carry.
Malik Hawkins had a game and career-high 16 tackles, while Caldwell followed with nine tackles, 3.0 tackles-for-loss, a sack and breakup. The duo rank 2-3 in the MACJC in total tackles.
Northwest will entertain No. 1 East Mississippi (7-0, 4-0) next Thursday night at 6:30 in Senatobia.
