CHARLESTON, S.C. – Texas senior left tackle and former NJCAA First Team All-American Donald Hawkins has accepted an invitation to play in the Inaugural Medal of Honor Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 11.
The game is scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m. CST at Johnson Hagood Stadium, home venue of The Citadel. Hawkins will suit up for the National squad, coached by Chan Gailey, and wear No. 61.
During his two seasons at UT, Hawkins played in 25 games, including 24 starts (all at left tackle). After transferring from Northwest prior to the 2012 season, he went on to earn first team All-Big 12 honors from the San Antonio Express-News this year, as well second team accolades from the Associated Press, league coaches and Athlon.
A native of Tunica, Hawkins helped the offense rank 36th nationally in rushing (196.2 yards per game) in 2013 and aided the offensive line in surrendering just 16 sacks which ranked tied for 17th fewest in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
Hawkins started all 19 games at Northwest during the 2010-11 seasons and helped the Rangers to a combined 15-4 overall record and 10-2 mark in north division play. He was named first team all-state, Region 23 Lineman of the Year and a first team all-american as a sophomore. Northwest averaged over 420 yards-per-game and 200 on the ground in his two seasons.
An NFL prospect, Hawkins is projected as a 7th round/FA selection by several mock draft boards.
