WESSON – The Northwest women's soccer team opened the 2013 season in style this past weekend, winning road matches at Southwest 3-1 and Copiah-Lincoln 7-1.
Northwest had to rally from a 1-0 deficit on Friday at Southwest and knotted the match at 1-1 just before the halftime whistle thanks to Alex Young's first of two goals off a Yanira Cura free kick.
Holly Newman scored her first collegiate goal, which proved to be the game-winner, in the 51st minute to give the Lady Rangers a 2-1 lead and Young would net her second goal of the match in the 62nd minute from Bree Francis to put the finishing touches on a season-opening win.
Friday's win also gave first-year head coach Levi Nunnally his first career victory.
On Saturday at Co-Lin, Alex Jones and Taylor Renth each scored their first collegiate goals to give Northwest a 3-1 lead at the break and the Lady Rangers scored three early in the second half in 6 minutes for a lopsided 7-1 victory.
Young had three assists in the match, while Newman added two goals and sophomore Emily Williams scored two in a 4:29 span.
Northwest will have a week off before returning to the pitch against St. Charles on Aug. 31 in Senatobia.
