SENATOBIA – Northwest opened up its regular season home slate with a win Sunday afternoon over Southwest, using goals from freshmen Aaron Terrazas and Gnande Zleh to take a 3-0 victory.
Northwest improved to 2-1 on the young season, while Southwest dropped to 0-3.
The Rangers opened a busy week of soccer with a 6-0 win at Copiah-Lincoln on Tuesday, getting a hat-trick from Terrazas and two goals and two assists from Muhamed Bojang. Northwest dropped a 3-1 decision at Hinds on Friday in a very physical affair that saw a combined 27 fouls.
Northwest looked to put Southwest away early on Sunday, but Zleh was denied by Bears goalkeeper Will Evans on a penalty kick in the 4th minute.
Terrazas broke a scoreless tie with his team-leading fourth goal of the year in the 24th minute, using a well-played ball from Zleh in the box and firing it home for a 1-0 lead.
Bojang and the Rangers threatened again in the 57th minute, but his rocket shot clanged off the crossbar.
Zleh picked up his first career goal in the 71st minute and Northwest grabbed an own goal in the 75th minute to put the game out of reach late.
Taylor Thevenot and Josh Delgado split halves in the net for Northwest, with Thevenot earning the win and Delgado picking up all three of the team's saves. Evans closed the match with nine saves for Southwest.
Northwest will welcome Meridian to Senatobia on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
