MOORHEAD – Freshman
D'Montrise Swinney had a career night in hauling in six passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns and 4th-ranked Northwest scored 34 unanswered points after a slow start to pick up a 41-13 road win over Mississippi Delta Thursday night at Jim Randall Stadium.
Northwest pushed its win streak out to eight games in improving to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the north division. Delta dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in league play.
Scoreless after the first quarter, Delta lit up the scoreboard first after using a 54-yard return on a blocked Chase Carpenter field goal attempt that set up a 4-play, 32-yard drive. Backup QB William Robinson kept it from 1-yard out for the score and the 7-0 lead.
After stalling out on its first four drives, Northwest finally got going offensively.
Domonique Harris hit Swinney from 37-yards out to tie the score at 7-7 after Ty Northern recovered a fumble at the Trojans' 37-yard line that was forced by Demarcus Pegues.
The Rangers would carry the offensive momentum the rest of the half in taking a 21-7 lead at the break, scoring on their ensuing two drives. Damian Baker picked up his team-leading sixth rushing touchdown of the year from 5-yards out and Percy O'Bannon added one from 10-yards out.
Lawon Debardelaben's first of two interceptions setup the Rangers' first score of the third quarter, with Harris connecting with Swinney a second time from 15 yards to give Northwest a 27-7 lead. Josh Gaston then picked up his first career touchdown less than five minutes later from 12-yards out and Northwest led 34-7 with 7:59 left in the third.
Delta would respond to Gaston's touchdown with one of their own, putting together a 7-play, 55-yard drive to pull within 34-13 after the PAT missed. Justin Leavy completed all three passes on the drive and also rushed for 20 yards and the 8-yard keeper.
Debardelaben capped the scoring with a 41-yard interception return for a score at the 2:37-mark of the fourth quarter, the Rangers' nation-leading 15th pick of the season and third returned for a score.
Northwest outgained Delta 300-254 on the night and was a perfect 4-for-4 in the red zone.
Harris, who entered on the third series of the night after Luke Hobson got the start, finished 15-of-22 for 191 yards and a career-high three touchdowns that covered 37, 15 and 12 yards. Hobson was 2-for-5 for five yards.
Baker led the rushing attack with 65 yards and a score on 16 carries, followed by O'Bannon who rushed for 53 yards and a score on 10 carries.
The Ranger defense had 7.0 tackles-for-loss on the night, 13 quarterback hurries, two sacks and two picks and was led by Pegues and Jayson Saffold who had seven tackles apiece.
Chase Carpenter also had a solid night in the punting game, averaging 41.3 yards on seven attempts with four inside the 20 and a career-long 60-yard boot in the third quarter.
Northwest will welcome Holmes (3-2, 3-0) to Bobby Franklin Field next Thursday for a 6:30 kick.
