Khulfan, Smith Pace Northwest to Impressive 5-2 Win over Co-Lin

SENATOBIA – Paced by two goals each from sophomores Fakhry Khulfan and Nathan Smith, the Northwest men's soccer team bounced back from a tough loss to Jones County by knocking off visiting Copiah-Lincoln 5-2 Tuesday afternoon.

Northwest evened its season record to 2-2, while Co-Lin fell to 1-3 on the young season.

Khulfan got the scoring started for the Rangers in the 12th minute, one-touching a cross into the box from Robbie Fox and sending it over the keeper's head for the 1-0 lead.

Co-Lin would respond in the 23rd minute to knot the game at 1-1 when Emilio Collado buried a ball into the lower corner off a Hunter Hatcher assist.

Northwest jumped back in front just 54 seconds later off Smith's first goal of the match, getting his own rebound after a nice save from Jeremany Washington and firing it into the goal.

Again Co-Lin responded immediately, knotting the match at 2-2 in the 26th minute when Hunter Foster kicked in the botched save from John Denton.

The Rangers would take complete control in the second half, however, scoring three unanswered goals to take the 5-2 victory.

Francisco Diaz's first goal of the year proved to be the game-winner in the 49th minute, with Khulfan adding another goal in the 53rd minute. Smith answered Khulfan with his second goal of the match in the 82nd minute, taking a bad pass from the Co-Lin keeper and sailing it over his head from almost 35-yards out for the score.

Northwest owned a 21-10 shot advantage (11-4 on goal) on the afternoon, including a 14-2 advantage alone in a dominant second half performance.

The Rangers will close out a three-match homestand on Friday, welcoming Holmes to Senatobia for a 4 p.m. kickoff to open north division play.
