Northwest, East Central Battle to 1-1 Double Overtime Draw

SENATOBIA – Freshman defender Ruddy Guzman scored his first collegiate goal in the 89th minute to force overtime and Northwest and East Central remained tied in the extra frames to wrap up a 1-1 double overtime draw Tuesday afternoon.

Northwest ran its unbeaten streak to four games, moving to 4-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in north division play. East Central moved to 2-5-2 overall and 0-2-1 in league action.

East Central struck first midway through the first half when Northwest keeper John Denton misplayed a shot by DeShawn Kitchens that fell into the back of the net for a 1-0 Warrior lead.

The lead would hold up all the way until the waning minutes when Guzman found the equalizer in the 89th minute past Jared Canoy. With a scramble in front of the net, Guzman took a ball from Nathan Smith and scored it for the goal to force extra time.

Neither team got much going in the first 10-minute overtime period, but the second and final 10 minutes had several scoring opportunities for both teams.

Kitchens looked to have the game-winner for East Central when Denton was out in the top of the box, but his flick over the head slowly bounced off the post wide right in the 105th minute.

Less than a minute later it looked to be Northwest with the win, but Jesse Moore's effort less than 5 yards in front of the box spun wide right. Fransisco Diaz's rifle shot from 20-yards out in the 108th minute proved to be the final scoring chance for either team, with his shot flying just feet over the top of the crossbar.

Northwest outshot East Central 22-10 on the day, led by six shots apiece from Fakhry Khulfan and Smith. Denton finished with four saves in a double overtime draw, while Canoy had seven for the Warriors.

The Rangers will open a four-game road swing Saturday, traveling to Hinds for a 6 p.m. kick.
