Kelly Lifts Northwest to Overtime Win at East Central, 2-1

DECATUR – Northwest capped off a season sweep of East Central on Friday afternoon, using a Kayla Kelly goal in overtime to pick up a 2-1 win over the Lady Warriors and keep their north division championship hopes alive.

Northwest improved to 4-2-1 in the north and 5-8-1 overall, running its unbeaten streak in league play to five games. East Central fell to 3-13 overall and 1-6 in the north.

Tied 1-1 after regulation on goals from East Central's Lauren Shimfessel and Northwest' Samantha Beard, the game needed an extra period to claim a winner.

It took just 3:21 off the clock for the Lady Rangers to strike in the extra frame, with Kelly scoring her third goal of the season on a Leighanne Stewart assist to take the thrilling win on the road.

Northwest outshot East Central 15-8 on the day, and got another solid performance in net from Kelli Brewer who stopped six shots to put her over the century mark on the year with 102 saves.

Northwest controls its own destiny next week, needing a win over Hinds on Tuesday in Senatobia to claim their second north division title in school history and first since 2006. A loss to Hinds would likely knock the Lady Rangers out of the playoffs.
