Raegan Chance Proves She Belongs Under the Bright Lights in Casper

The freshman barrel racer from Mendenhall sits near the top after her third go.

CASPER, Wyo. – Raegan Chance cracked the top five in the aggregate scoring after her Go 2 run at the Ford Wyoming Center on Tuesday afternoon.  The Northwest Mississippi Community College barrel racer from Mendenhall knocked more than a tenth of a second off her Go 1 time, despite losing the reins of her trusted horse, Sky, down the home stretch.

That ride gave the pair confidence heading into their final go of the week.  Chance excitedly looked ahead to Go 3 and the chance to perform in front of the larger crowd: "Honestly, just do what we always do. I mean go out there and go for it in the third round, just like we did in the first two and hope it works out. Just go out there and have fun, because this is just a great opportunity to be out here."

On Wednesday, they got their shot at a performance atmosphere under the lights in front of a nearly full Ford Wyoming Center.  Twelve riders completed their third go ahead of Chance during the performance round on Tuesday night. Twelve more would take their shot Wednesday night before Chance and Sky took their turn.

Chance and Sky had to wait patiently for their turn as the final duo of the night.  The pair circled in the waiting pen as the penultimate rider made her run.  Four riders managed a sub-13 second run in Go 3 before the Ranger.  They would need a strong run to maintain a spot atop the leaderboard with two nights remaining in the third go.

The Rangers burst through the Cinch Jeans gate and made the hard left into the first barrel, circled it cleanly, and proceeded to do the same through the final two.  The stretch run was no problem in Go 3 and the team crossed the timing barrier cleanly with their second-best time of the week – 13.94.

That time was good enough to put Chance and Sky in second place overall in the aggregate scoring at 41.85, just 6.5 tenths of a second behind the current leader, Devin Young of Texas A&M, with two performances remaining before the Short Go on Saturday night.

The duo will have to wait to see where they ultimately end up on Saturday night.  They, like steer wrestler Will Collier and bull rider Dakota Smith before them, have done all they can to put themselves in position for a championship at the College National Finals Rodeo.

The final round of the 2026 College National Finals Rodeo will be broadcast live on Saturday, June 20, beginning at 7:00 P. M. MDT / 8:00 P. M. CDT on ESPN+.
