PERKINSTON - Northwest Mississippi Community College women's basketball team (18-8, 9-3) dominated top MACCC foe Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (16-5, 10-2) in a 69-37 victory.
The game started off with a stellar display of both offense and defense from the Rangers. NWCC scored 22 points and only allowed MGCCC to score nine points in the first quarter.
Although the Rangers' offense slowed down from the boom of the first quarter, it continued to shine throughout the game, scoring at least 15 points in three of the four quarters.
Once again, the Northwest offense over performed their season's average in every statistical category. The team shot 40.3% from the floor, 42.1% from the three-point line, and 64.7% from the free throw line.
The Rangers' were particularly successful from the three-point line, making eight three pointers, the highest number all season.
Sophomore guard Dekyra Mitchell led NWCC with 25 points. The majority of Mitchell's points came from the three-point line where she made six of her 11 shots. Sophomore forward Alorian Story had another trademark double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore forward Takera Bland was one rebound away from a double-double herself. Bland finished the night with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Mississippi Gulf Coast came into the contest, averaging 61.9 points per game. However, the Northwest defense had control of the game from start to finish, only allowing the Bulldogs to score 37 points and only allowing double digit points in two quarters.
NWCC has done an exceptional job of taking care of the basketball in their most recent games. In the victory over MGCCC, Northwest only turned the ball over seven times, the least amount of turnovers since a game against Itawamba Community College on February 26, 2024.
Northwest (18-8, 9-3) will be back at home for Sophomore Night in Howard Coliseum to take on East Central (9-14, 5-7) on Thursday, February 26 at 5:30 p.m.
