Sloan Stewart continues strong start as he picks up win in steer wrestling at the Boll Weevil Stampede

Stewart moves to first in the Ozark Region All-Around chase

MONTICELLO, AR – The Northwest Mississippi Community College rodeo team had a slow weekend, with only a pair of competitors making it back to the short go at the Boll Weevil Stampede, highlighted by another strong weekend from Sloan Stewart, who picked up his first points in the calf roping and jumped into the lead in steer wrestling after the third rodeo of the season.

The freshman from North Carolina ended up winning the average in steer wrestling, finishing the first go with a time of 4.2, which was tied for the fastest time of the go and of the rodeo, earning 55 points. He caught his second steer in 4.9 seconds, which was the third fastest of the final performance, and was the fastest of anyone in the top six to pick up 40 points and clinch the average time with a 9.1 on two.

His 155 points moved him into first in the region standings with 295 total points, 45 points ahead of second place and 140 points ahead of third.

He added to his total on the week with a comeback in calf roping, making his first run in 12.7 seconds, which was the seventh-fastest time of the long go. His 13.6 in the short go was the sixth fastest of that round, netting him a 26.3 in the average and a fifth-place finish after the top two coming back failed to complete their runs.

The scores earned him 185 points overall on the week and saw him move into the conversation for the Ozark Region Men's All-Around, surging to the top of the list with 495 total points on the season. He holds a 50-point lead on Caden Ussery from the University of West Alabama and is 75 points ahead of Teigan Orr, also out of West Alabama.

Trey Weekley also made it back to the short to in steer wrestling, finishing his first run in 5.0 seconds, earning a three-way tie for sixth and ten points. While he caught his second steer, the 7.7 wasn't fast enough for points, but it was enough to share sixth in the average, and he picked up 15 points in the event to get onto the board for the first time this year in the region standings.

That was it for the Rangers making it back to the short go, and the team would wrap it up with a sixth-place finish in the rodeo.

Northwest returns to action with their fourth rodeo in a row at the newest event on the circuit, making the trip to West Plains, Missouri, this weekend from October 8-10 at the Heart of the Ozarks Fairgrounds for the Grizzly Rodeo, hosted by Missouri State University – West Plains.
