SENATOBIA - For the first time in program history, both Northwest men's and women's tennis teams have earned at-large bids to the upcoming NJCAA national tournaments.
For the second consecutive season, the Lady Rangers will compete in the NJCAAÂ Division I Women's Tennis Championships, scheduled for May 3-7 at the JoAnn Medlock Murphy Tennis Center in Tyler, Texas. Northwest finished the year with a 10-6 overall record and a 6-3 mark against MACCC opponents.
In last year's event, the Lady Rangers made a strong run throughout the week, with
Allie Rawles winning the flight five singles consolation draw. The doubles tandem of
Mattie Sanders and
Grace Ann Wade also made the consolation finals of flight two doubles.
Rawles and Sanders both return to the national tournament, after Sanders was recently chosen for All-MACCC accolades. Both players finished 8-3 in singles for the season.
Meanwhile, the Northwest men's team will return to its second national tournament in the last three seasons and the first for coach
Andy Wolf. The NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships are slated for May 12-16 at Dr. Eddie Floyd Tennis Center in Florence, S.C.
This season, the Rangers finished 11-6 overall and 7-3 in the MACCC. Three Northwest players have 10 or more regular season wins in singles competition, led by an 11-3 record from
Joshua Tedford.
Cole Stoddard and
Holden Cooke also have 10 victories apiece, while
Brady Holliman holds an 8-6 record.
Both teams have been a mainstay in the ITA JUCO Rankings this season, with the latest polls having the men at No. 18 and the Lady Rangers ranked 20th.
