Northwest men's tennis falls 5-1 to the top seeded Jones College in the semifinals of the Region 23 Tournament

The Rangers will play in the third place match tomorrow at 2 p.m.

ELLISVILLE - The Northwest Mississippi Community College men's tennis team (8-8) fell 5-1 to top seed Jones College (16-1) in the semifinals of the Region 23 Tournament in Ellisville at Bobcat Tennis Courts.

This loss puts the Rangers in the third place match at 2 p.m. tomorrow where they will play either the second seed Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (11-6) or the third seed Copiah-Lincoln Community College (8-5).

"We competed well but unfortunately came up short," Head Coach Mounce said. "Similar to the girls' match last week, we played well in spots. To beat a team as talented as Jones, though, you have to play a complete match."

Although Jones held the momentum for the entire match, only losing one match due to a retirement, Northwest still saw some bright spots on the court.

Sophomore Jordan Mitchell was a crucial part of both of the bright spots. Mitchell was a member of the #2 doubles team that made Jones sweat the most, narrowly losing 8-5. In his singles match, he was winning the first set 6-3 and up in the second set 2-1, and it was shaping up to be the shining moment for Northwest. However, the Bobcats clinched the match, and Mitchell's match was halted before a result could be confirmed.

Tomorrow at 2 p.m. NWCC will face the loser of the #2/#3 matchup between MGCCC and Co-Lin in the third place match in Ellisville at the Bobcat Tennis Courts.

"We want to go out with a win for these sophomores that have done so much for this program," Mounce said. "They have worked so hard for this opportunity, and I want the guys to go out and win for each other."
