OXFORD, AL – The second tournament of the fall was a good one for the Northwest Mississippi Community College women's golf team which took part in the NJCAA Division II South District Preview, hosted by Cider Ridge Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday.
Northwest finished fifth as a team, posting a two-day score of +129 to finish ten strokes behind host Snead State Community College and they had the best tournament of any teams from the MACCC, finishing nearly 100 strokes better than Northeast Mississippi and well ahead of Pearl River and East Mississippi.
The Rangers had a very consistent pair of rounds, shooting a 63-over on the first day and a 66-over on the second. Tuesday's round also saw every Ranger finish below 100 for the first time this season.
Freshman AnaLeigh Little was the top golfer for the second consecutive tournament for the Rangers, finishing in a tie for sixth place at 16-over for the tournament. Day one was very impressive despite a rough start to the round which saw Little go five-over after just seven holes. Her back nine was much better and included a pair of birdies on the way to a 78 that had her in a tie for third going into the second day.
Day two saw an improvement on the font nine for Little, going two-over but a nine on the par-five 15th derailed the round slightly and she finished with an 82.
Only one golfer from a Mississippi school had a better tournament than Little and three of the five that finished ahead of her were from the defending national champion Shelton State Community College.
Bella McNeil also put together a solid two days for the Rangers, finishing in a tie for 12th. McNeil had a spectacular start to the tournament, making the turn on day one at just one-over after she birdied the par-five ninth. Her back nine saw a few ugly holes mar what was an otherwise strong showing, picking up a seven on the par-four tenth and a nine on the par-five 18th. That offset a second birdie on the par-three 14th.
The second day got off to a rocky start for McNeil with an eight on the opening hole, but five straight pars got the freshman back on track and she made the turn at nine-over. Her back nine didn't see any highs or lows, with six bogey's and three pars leading to an 87 on the card for a 25-over for the tournament.
Avery Savage made her debut for the Rangers after sitting out the home tournament two weeks ago. The freshman battled through the front nine and making the turn on a high note with a birdie on the par-five ninth. She also birdied the par-four 13th, improving her score from the front nine to finish at 20-over on the day.
Her second day saw even more improvement, and she doubled the number of holes that she finished par or better on with seven pars through the round on the way to a 16-over to finish 36-over for the tournament and in a tie for 30th in the field of 60.
Addison Forbes finished just ahead of fellow sophomore Zaeja Davis in a tie for 43, carding a 99 on the opening day where she struggled on the par fives but played better on the second day with her second birdie of the season on the par-four 13th and reduced her score by two strokes with a 97 on the second day.
Davis also improved her round from the first day to the second, putting together an 11-over back nine to finish with a 100 on the day. She doubled down on the second day, picking up a birdie on the par-five fourth and didn't have any scores above a double bogey on the back nine on the way to a season best 97, finishing in 45th with a 53-over for the tournament.
Sarah Niblett played as the lone individual golfer for the Rangers and had an off day on the opening, picking up a par on the fourth hole, but finishing with a 108. Niblett had the best improvement of any NWCC golfer at the tournament, bettering her score by ten strokes on the second day including five pars on the way to a 98 and a 50th place finish in the field.
The Rangers will be back in Alabama in two weeks when they travel to Union Grove for the Snead State Women's Fall Invitational hosted by Cherokee Ridge Country Club on October 13th and 14th.
