CASPER, Wyo. - After not placing in saddle bronc riding in the opening day of the College National Finals Rodeo on Sunday, Northwest freshman
Christian Cagle rebounded nicely in steer wrestling on Monday, finishing the opening round with a tie for second place.
Cagle was one of three Northwest steer wrestlers to compete on Monday, recording a time of 4.7 seconds, joining David Gallagher of the University of Wyoming. Sam Carson of Utah Valley University came away with the top time of 4.5 seconds.
Kent Jordan finished tied for 24th place with his time of 14.6 seconds, while
Will Collier recorded no score.
"There are some things we could do better, but I think there is a lot that we have done well," Northwest rodeo coach Will Lummus said. "I think Luke should have gotten a re-ride, but that didn't go our way. Christian had a great start, a great catch and just a great performance all the way around. Most of these guys are freshmen, and just making it to the CNFR is amazing in itself. I think rookie jitters got a couple of our guys, but that's part of it."
Additionally,
Laine Moore and his team roping partner, Tanner Brown (East Mississippi), were left with no score in their event debut on Monday afternoon. Bull rider
Luke Stanley also competed for the second day in a row, but once again left with no score.
All five Rangers will once again compete throughout the day on Tuesday, with Cagle, Jordan and Collier all taking part in the second round of steer wrestling. Cagle will also compete once more in saddle bronc riding, while Moore will compete in the second round of team roping.
Additionally, Stanley is scheduled to go again in bull riding this evening, beginning at 8 P.M. Central (7 P.M. Mountain). His performance will be a part of the first night of coverage on ESPN Plus, which is available for streaming through the ESPN app on your smart TV or mobile device.
