MONTICELLO, Ark. - Two Northwest competitors won the average titles in last weekend's Boll Weevil Stampede at the University of Arkansas-Monticello.
Sophomore
Darby Toole placed first in breakaway roping, earning 165 total points, while mid-year transfer
Wesley Colbert earned 120 points to take the title in bull riding. The individual finishes helped the Northwest men's rodeo team place third with 430 total points, while the Lady Rangers attained a fourth-place result with 165 team points.
Toole, a native of Eudora, finished with a result of 2.7 in the first round, compiling 45 points. She then advanced to the short-go, collecting a 2.5 result and 60 additional points, narrowly beating out Anna Wilder (UT Martin).
Meanwhile, Colbert was one of only three competitors to place in bull riding, collecting 60 points in the first round. None of the other competitors placed in the short-go, keeping Colbert's average as the top mark for the weekend.
Several other Rangers placed throughout the weekend, including
Will Collier, who won the short-go and placed second in the average for steer wrestling.
Wyatt Newman finished fourth in the average, and
Laine Moore finished fifth in the average for both steer wrestling and calf roping. Additionally,
Austin Roberts and
Joseph Moody both finished in third place in the average for team roping.
Although the Ranger men are still third place in the team standings, the good showing at UAM helped Northwest close the gap to 130 points from second place. Currently, Missouri Valley College leads the men's team standings, with Northwest nipping at the heels of second-place West Alabama.
Regular season competition will conclude this weekend with the annual Ranger Rodeo, hosted by Northwest, from April 25-27. Thursday night is Northwest Night, Friday is First Responders' Night and Saturday is Northwest Alumni Night.
