POPLARVILLE - A 14-0 run in the first quarter helped No. 10 Pearl River pull away from Northwest in Monday's 91-38 loss for the Lady Rangers.
Northwest trailed 35-11 after the first quarter and Pearl River outscored the Lady Rangers 24-11 in the second quarter, sending the Lady Wildcats to halftime with a 59-22 advantage. Things didn't get much better in the second half for Northwest, as the Lady Rangers were held to just 16 points.
Pearl River shot 42 percent from the floor, while Northwest was held to just 29 percent shooting. The Lady Rangers were also limited to just 29 percent from three-point range and just 57 percent from the charity stripe, while the Lady Wildcats shot 33 percent from beyond the arc and 83 percent from the free throw line.
Northwest was outscored 54-12 in bench points and 30-7 in points off turnovers. The Lady Wildcats also bested the Lady Rangers, 42-22, in the paint.
Mariah Reed-Jones led the Lady Rangers with nine points, while
Angela Middleton collected six points and six rebounds.
Jacia Hayes led the team with seven rebounds and two blocks.
Four Pearl River players reached double figures, led by 17 points apiece from Brooklyn Anderson, Hama'ya Fielder and Taylor Johnson-Matthews. Anderson also finished with a double-double, earning 13 rebounds.
Northwest dropped to 13-6 on the season and 5-3 in the MACCC, while Pearl River improved to 19-3 overall and 6-1 in conference. The Lady Rangers will turn their focus to Thursday, February 15, when Coahoma (12-5, 4-3 MACCC) makes the short trip to Howard Coliseum. The Lady Tigers are coming off a loss to Mississippi Gulf Coast, which snapped a three-game winning streak.
