SENATOBIA - With the first half of the 2023-24 rodeo season in the rearview mirror, coach Will Lummus and Northwest are looking to capitalize on a successful fall stretch with the release of the NIRA Ozark Region spring schedule.
The first event of the spring will take place the weekend of March 14-16, when the Rangers travel to Meridian for the East Mississippi Rodeo. From there, Northwest remains in the Magnolia State the following weekend, taking part in the PRCC Rodeo in Poplarville.
April will feature three rodeo events to close out the regular season, with UT Martin hosting an event from April 11-13, followed by the Boll Weevil Stampede at Arkansas-Monticello from April 18-20. The Ozark Region schedule will once again conclude with the annual Ranger Rodeo, hosted by Northwest, from April 25-27. (More details on the Ranger Rodeo will be made available in the coming months.)
Northwest closed out the fall by rising to second place in the region men's standings, thanks in part to a first place finish in the fall finale at Murray State. The Rangers have 2,055 team points, trailing only Missouri Valley College. Bull rider
Luke Stanley leads the region with 330 points, while six steer wrestlers will enter the spring in the top 10.
Christian Cagle is second in the region standings for steer wrestling, finishing the fall with 320 team points. Fellow steer wrestlers
Kent Jordan,
Wyatt Newman and
Will Collier are fourth, fifth and sixth in the standings, respectfully, while
Laine Moore and Henry Burgess are ninth and 10th.
Cagle is also second in the men's all-around standings with 650 points, while also placing fourth in saddle bronc riding (330 points). Burgess and Moore are also in the top 10 for tie-down roping, with Moore also ranking fourth in team roping.
Meanwhile, the women's team is currently 10th in the region standings, looking to make a jump over the final five events.
