MCKINNEY, Texas - Northwest opened its national tournament run with losses on Monday, sending the Rangers into the back draw (consolation bracket).
Kaleb Parish provided the Rangers with their closest singles battle in Flight 3, taking Gabriel Meirelles of Prairie State College to three sets. Meirelles edged Parish in a tough first set, 7-6 (2), before Parish rallied back for a 7-5 victory to force the deciding third set. That's when Merielles took a 6-2 decision to clinch the match against the sophomore from Maben.
Another competitive battle in singles came in Flight 4, where
Bratton Willoughby dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Mario Molina (USC-Sumter).
In doubles, the Rangers duo of Willoughby and
Samuel Turner took a 6-2, 6-4 loss to the USC-Sumter duo of Mathis Collignon and Andres Viedma. Northwest also dropped the first sets in doubles' flights one and three, before being shutout in each of the second sets.
Northwest will move forward in the back draw, beginning tomorrow morning. A full schedule of those matches, with opponents, is still being determined as of this writing.
