Box Score AUBURN, Ala. - Despite what seemed like a pair of lopsided 9-0 finals against Coastal Alabama-South, the Northwest tennis teams had plenty of close, competitive matches on Saturday.
In women's singles, the closest match came at No. 1, where
Amelia Anding dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Emma Pager.
Holly Stewart also fell in a close battle to Taji Williams (6-2, 6-4) at the No. 3 slot.
At No. 2,
Grace Ann Wade fell 6-2, 6-2 to Sydney Cohen, while
Rivers Tarsi dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 5 to Alyssa Steed.
Raney Peacock and
Lia Ramos were both shutout on courts four and six.
In doubles, the duo of Anding and Wade dropped a close, hard-fought match to Cohen and Pager, falling 8-6 in the No. 1 doubles slot. Peacock and Stewart fell 8-3 on court two, while Ramos and Tarsi were shutout on court three.
In men's singles,
Chris Albert earned a first-set victory at the No. 2 singles slot, but then dropped the remaining two sets to Santiago Castillo, 6-3 and 10-7. Another close battle came on court three, where
Kaleb Parish fell 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) to Torean King.
In the No. 4 singles slot,
Bratton Willoughby dropped a 6-4, 6-3 battle to Ethan Cuzzort, while
Samuel Turner fell 6-1, 6-3 to Peyton Hickman on court six.
Ian Gordon lost a pair of 6-1, 6-1 sets to Guido Loayza, while
John David Nelson fell 6-2, 6-0 to Lethan Nguyen on court five.
All three doubles matches resulted in tight battles, namely on courts two and three. The duo of Parish and Turner fell 9-7 against Cuzzort and King, while Gordon and Nelson dropped a 9-7 loss on court three against Gavin Jordan and James Wassell.
Additionally, Albert and Willoughby fell 8-5 at No. 1 doubles to Castillo and Loayza.
With both teams at 0-2 in non-conference play, Northwest will now turn its attention to next week's MACCC opener against Meridian. The match is scheduled for Tuesday, February 14 at 1 P.M. in Senatobia.
