Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Just two days removed from a clean sweep of conference foe Hinds, the Northwest tennis took a brief step out of conference play against UT Southern on Thursday afternoon.

Despite showing some promise on the men's side, the Rangers and Lady Rangers came away empty-handed against the four-year program, falling by a pair of 9-0 finals. The matches were held at Rhodes College in Memphis.

Perhaps the closest match of the day came from Chris Albert in the No. 2 slot. The Vicksburg native battled to a third-set tiebreaker after claiming the second set against Rage Matuck, but ultimately dropped the match with a 10-8 tiebreaker loss.

Ian Gordon and John David Nelson also had a couple competitve matches in singles play. Gordon dropped a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Juan Camilo Moreno at the No. 1 position, while Nelson fell in the No. 5 slot to Alejandro Pastrana by a 6-3, 6-1 decision.

Both Northwest teams are 1-4 on the season following Thursday's losses. Up next for the Rangers and Lady Rangers is a Friday conference showdown at East Central, a twinbill that includes a battle with the Lady Rangers and the 20th-ranked Lady Warriors.
