Box Score SENATOBIA - Tuesday, February 21 will forever be remembered as a significant day in the history of the Northwest tennis programs, after both men's and women's teams scored a pair of identical 5-4 victories against Hinds.
Both wins marked coach Will Irvin's first career victories, with his 24th-ranked men's team scoring the victory against the 21st-ranked Eagles.Â
"We took the Meridian loss tough," Irvin said. "They're an established, highly-ranked program and that's where we eventually want to be. We had to reiterate as a team that it's not about the wins or losses; it's about the journey we take and how we keep pushing. What I saw from us [against Hinds] was the fight. There is a lot of fight in our team right now. Outside of Northwest, the expectation [of us] is low, but for us, our expectations are high. There is more to come from this group and I am beyond impressed with how hard we worked over the past week."
Northwest began with two wins on the women's side, as Hinds had to forfeit one singles and one doubles point. However, the Lady Rangers still had to earn three more points on their own to secure a win, starting with
Amelia Anding and
Grace Ann Wade's 8-0 doubles win at No. 2 against the Lady Eagles' duo of Yasmin Colon and Lucy Warner.
Up 3-1 heading into singles, freshman
Raney Peacock earned a solid shutout win at the No. 4 slot, defeating Warner in straight sets. Though
Rivers Tarsi dropped a close three-set decision at No. 5 to Anna-Marie Harrington, Wade sealed the match with her 6-2, 6-4 victory against Colon on court three.
On the men's side of things, the Rangers notched two solid wins in doubles, starting with an 8-6 win on court two by
Samuel Turner and
Bratton Willoughby.
Kaleb Parish and
John David Nelson put Northwest up 2-1 after a strong 8-1 win on No. 3, against Reese Harper and Dalton Jones.
Hinds scored victories in the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 slot, despite a close, gritty effort from Willoughby against Jacob Runnels. However, the Rangers countered with a victory on court five, after
John David Nelson won by default against Tahir Elzare, tying the match at 4-4.
With the fate of the match lying in the hands of Turner, the sophomore clinched the win for Northwest, edging Jones by a pair of 7-6, 7-6 finals in the No. 6 slot.
Next up for Northwest is a road trip to East Central on Friday, February 24. The Warriors (1-4, 1-2 MACCC) are unranked on the men's side, but the Lady Warriors currently hold a No. 20 national ranking by the ITA, and are currently 2-4 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.
Both matches are slated for 2 P.M. start times in Decatur.Â
