MURRAY, Ky. - To say
Christian Cagle had a good weekend in the Bluegrass State would be an understatement. The freshman from Canton, Ga., came up big over the weekend for the Rangers, placing second in the average for saddle bronc riding and first in the average in steer wrestling. The cowboy's performance was good enough in those events to vault him to the All Around title at the 48th Annual Racer Roundup College Rodeo hosted by Murray State University from November 16 - 18. That marks the first All Around title for a Ranger Athlete since at least the 2010-11 season.
Cagle's performance certainly was not the only bright spot for the Rangers on the weekend though.
Laine Moore,
Wyatt Newman,
Will Collier, and
Luke Stanley all delivered big performances for the squad to lead Northwest to the Men's team title, a first since at least the 2010-11 season. The Rangers finished with 635 total points, edging out second place Missouri Valley by 10 points.
Moore, a freshman from Albertville, Ala., placed fourth in the long round, third in the short round, and third in the average of the calf roping event for a total of 110 points.
Collier, a freshman steer wrestler from Malden, Mo., tied for third in the long round, took third in the short, and second in the average, finishing just behind Cagle in that event with 125 points.
Newman, a freshman from Wilsonville, Ala., placed first in the short round, and third in the average-just behind Collier with 100 points in steer wrestling.
Stanley, the veteran of the bunch, contributed a weekend highlight in the second round of the bull riding event. The sophomore from Mantachie led all riders in the second round with a score of 80.
But it was Cagle with the huge performance on the weekend. He finished third in both rounds and second in the average during the saddle bronc riding event for a total of 130 points. He then added a first place run in the long round, second in the short round behind Newman, and first in the average of the steer wrestling event for a total of 170 points.
The strong finish to the fall schedule moves Coach
Will Lummus' squad into second place overall in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association's Ozark Region going into the holiday break. The team will resume action in the spring semester, March 14-16, at the East Mississippi Rodeo held annually at the Lauderdale County Agri-Center in Meridian.
