SENATOBIA - Points were not hard to come by for the Northwest Lady Rangers in the recent Northwest Classic.
In two games against Arkansas State Mid-South and National Park College, the Lady Rangers outscored their opponents by a combined 167-81 margin. Northwest defeated ASU Mid-South on Thursday evening, 74-36, and National Park on Friday afternoon, 93-45.
In the win against the Lady Greyhounds, Northwest jumped out to a 22-6 advantage in the first quarter and limited ASU Mid-South to just nine points in the second quarter. The Lady Rangers turned their 40-15 halftime lead into a 21-point third quarter, all but sealing the season sweep against the Lady Greyhounds.
Jacia Hayes was one of three Lady Rangers to reach double figures, falling just shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore
Zaria Glover led all scorers with 14 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Additionally,
Marian Jenkins provided 12 points and five rebounds, while
Mikayla Abram continued to add to her season block total, swatting away four shots. Freshman
Mariah Reed-Jones also scored nine points to further aid Northwest.
Northwest shot 40 percent from the floor and 30 percent from three-point range, while completing 10 of its 11 free throw attempts. Defensively, the Lady Rangers denied all ASU Mid-South three-pointers, as the Lady Greyhounds finished 0-for-9 from beyond the arc.
ASU Mid-South also shot just 23 percent from the floor, making 14 of its 61 attempted shots. The Lady Greyhounds were led by 10 points from London Robinson and 12 rebounds from Jakiyah Bell.
In Friday's victory against National Park College, the Lady Rangers raced out to a 25-11 lead by the end of the first quarter, before outscoring the opponents by an 18-8 margin in the second quarter. By halftime, Northwest led 43-19.
Northwest continued to pull away throughout the second half, scoring 50 points in the final two quarters. The 93-point total was the highest of the season for the Lady Rangers and the most points scored since November 7, 2022 (W, 94-40 vs. Blue Mountain Christian JV).
Four Northwest players scored in double digits, led by 15 points off the bench from
Kae'la Mitchell.
Lily Whitley provided a career-high 14 points off the bench as well, followed by 13 from Glover and 12 from Hayes.
Northwest outmatched the Lady Nighthawks in total rebounds, 37-23.
Merciana Sandifer led the Lady Rangers with seven boards, followed by six from Jenkins.
Northwest shot 52 percent from the floor, compared to just 27 percent by National Park. The Lady Rangers were also 57 percent from three-point range and 72 percent from the free throw line, while the Lady Nighthawks finished just 33 percent from beyond the arc and 73 percent from the charity stripe.
Hope Thomas collected nearly half of National Park's point total, earning 21 points to lead all scorers. Kaylee Meredith also added 13 points, as Makia Cravey led with five rebounds.
With the sweep, Northwest improved to 7-0 on the season, matching last season's win total. The Lady Rangers will put their unbeaten record to the test on Monday, November 27, with a non-conference road contest at East Mississippi.
