SENATOBIA - Although a pair of first half goals from
Matt Roth made things close for the first 45 minutes, Northwest surrendered three goals in the second half to drop a 7-2 loss to sixth-ranked Jones College on Friday afternoon.
Northwest fell to 4-10 on the season and 4-6 in the MACCC with the loss, as the Bobcats improved to 12-2-2 overall and 8-1-1 in conference play. The loss also dropped the Rangers to ninth in the conference standings, further dampening the postseason chances for Northwest.
Less than five minutes into the match, Jones College got on the board thanks to Luke Dickson. In the 13th minute, Roth would provide the equalizer, beating the Bobcats' goalkeeper one-on-one.
Dickson would strike again in the 27th minute to break the scoreless tie, giving his Bobcats the 2-1 advantage. Just three minutes later, Samuel Hadley would connect with Taylor Richardson, giving Jones College the 3-1 advantage.
In the 32nd minute, Roth helped keep the Rangers in the match with his second goal, which once again came unassisted. Though the score cut the deficit to 3-2, Hadley provided another goal for the Bobcats in the 36th minute, bringing the score to a 4-2 margin at halftime.
Roughly 10 minutes into the second half, Jones College further widened the gap, as Denim Lombard scored off a Callum Black assist. In the 64th minute, Black once again provided an assist, this time to Cameron Chamberlain, as the Bobcats' lead swelled to 6-2.
Less than 15 seconds later, the Bobcats added insult to injury with Broc Bookout's goal. From there, Northwest managed to keep Jones College off the scoreboard, but the Rangers were unable to cut further into the deficit.
Jones College outmatched the Rangers 23-18 in total shots, including an 18-10 margin in shots on-goal.
Will Thompson managed 11 saves in a full 90 minutes of work, while the Bobcats' duo of Liam McGrath and Joshua Goodwin combined for eight saves.
Both teams combined for 24 fouls, with Jones College assessed for 14 infractions. Lombard was issued a caution in the 38th minute, while
Miller Thorsen and
J.T. Reesor were assessed yellow cards for Northwest.
Northwest will now turn its attention to Tuesday evening's regular season finale at Pearl River. The Wildcats (7-4-3, 6-1-3 MACCC) have won or tied each of their last nine matches, including Friday's 3-1 win at Copiah-Lincoln.
