Ranger men fall 3-1 to Wolves on rainy night against Copiah-Lincoln

Starnes scores second half goal for eighth of the season

WESSON – The Northwest Mississippi Community College men's soccer team battled the weather and the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves on Tuesday night in a drenching rainstorm on the way to a 3-1 loss to end their season on the road.

Northwest played well in the match, but another quick start by an opponent saw the Rangers playing from behind early and despite pitching a shutout in the second half, they couldn't muster enough offense to get past the Wolves in the loss.

It opened on sour note when a free kick from Yohan Bedoya from 20 yards out was initially saved by Jacob Little but is spun free from his grasp in the wet conditions and twisted just inside the frame in the fifth minute to put the Rangers in a 1-0 hole early on.

The lead doubled when a counterattack from Alvaro De La Torre set him up in a one-on-one with Little and after taking the Ranger goalie across the box, he found an angle to put one past in the 14th minute to make it 2-0 early for CoLin.

Northwest picked up a penalty kick a few minutes later and it looked like they were set up to get one of the goals back when Tendai Machingura lined up on the spot, but his attempt was saved on a dive by the goalie for CoLin to his left and a few minutes later, the Rangers saw an unfortunate deflection on a clearance attempt go off of a defender and into the back of the net for an own goal in the 19th minute.

Down 3-0, Northwest didn't pack it in though. The Rangers were able to hold off the Wolves and recover their balance going into the second half and from there began to take control of the game, getting more shots on goal and putting pressure on to the CoLin defense.

It broke through in the 62nd minute when Tyler Starnes blistered a shot past the goalie from 30 yards out to break the drought for Northwest and get them on the board at 3-1. It was the eighth goal of the season for the sophomore and gave him the outright team lead after entering the game tied for goals and points in the season with Machingura.

Despite putting eleven shots up in the second half, only four were able to be put on goal in the wet conditions and the Rangers were never able to get closer as the final horn sounded with the 3-1 decision going to the home side.

Northwest did see a strong game from Little in net despite the early goals, making five saves to add to his career leading total in the Northwest record books with 266 career saves in his two years in red and blue.

Northwest also caps off the year with six wins, which is tied for the most in a season since the 2016 campaign.
