LIVINGSTON, Ala. - For the second consecutive weekend, a Northwest men's rodeo athlete won the average in an event, this time in steer wrestling.
Competing in his home state, freshman
Kent Jordan captured the top finish in steer wrestling at the UWA Rodeo Showdown, hosted by West Alabama. Jordan finished with 180 total points, including 60 apiece in the first and second rounds. The Tallassee, Ala. native scored a 5.0 result in the opening round and a 4.7 in the second, totaling out an average of 9.7.
Jordan wasn't the only Ranger to earn a notable finish over the weekend. After earning second in the steer wrestling average at Missouri Valley College last weekend, fellow freshman
Christian Cagle placed second again, this time in saddle bronc riding. The Canton, Ga. native collected 110 total points, finishing 60 behind event winner Ty Pope (Missouri Valley College).
Wyatt Newman and
Hank Burgess also competed in steer wrestling, earning fifth and sixth place results, respectively.
Laine Moore also earned a fifth place result in team roping.
As a team, the Northwest men earned 280 points for a sixth place finish. The Lady Rangers did not place in the women's standings.
With two events in the books, Northwest stands at fourth in the NIRA Ozark Region men's team standings, compiling a total of 685 points so far. The Rangers trail only Missouri Valley, East Mississippi and Three Rivers College.
Next up for Northwest is a trip to Sikeston, Mo. for the Three Rivers Championship Rodeo, hosted by Three Rivers College. The event begins Thursday evening, October 5, and runs through Saturday evening, October 7.
