Box Score DYERSBURG, Tenn. - Northwest freshman guard
Kae'la Mitchell has reached double figures in four games this season. Two of those double-digit scoring efforts have come against Dyersburg State.
Mitchell, a freshman from Little Rock, netted 11 points to help the Lady Rangers earn a 70-61 road win at Dyersburg State on Saturday, marking her third straight game with 10 or more points. She previously scored 16 points against the Lady Eagles back in November, which remains her career-high so far.
Northwest held a slim 17-16 lead after the end of the first quarter, but expanded that margin slightly to a six-point, 37-31 advantage at halftime. The Lady Rangers had three-point shooting to thank for their first half lead, sinking eight shots from beyond the arc.
Taylor Caldwell and
Zaria Glover were responsible for half of those three-pointers, and the duo joined
Manaca Keyes with six points apiece.
However, the Lady Eagles had no intentions of folding on their home court, opening the second half on a 9-2 run to gain a 40-39 lead on Northwest. The two teams went back and forth in a tug-of-war throughout most of the second half, entering the fourth quarter with a 50-50 draw.
Although the Lady Rangers were able to gain some breathing room with just over three minutes remaining, Dyersburg State came back for one more late push. Trailing 59-52, the Lady Eagles trimmed the deficit to 62-59 with just over a minute remaining, but foul trouble mounted for the home team and denied the comeback for Dyersburg State.
Caldwell and Glover finished with eight points apiece, while
Marian Jenkins and
Alexus Lindsey each added seven points.
With the win, Northwest improved to 6-4 on the season and captured the program's third straight victory. The Lady Rangers will step back into MACCC competition on Monday, January 9 at Holmes for a 6 P.M. tipoff.
