JACKSON - Although Northwest showed signs of improvement from its season-opening loss at Blue Mountain, the Rangers were unable to come away victorious on Tuesday evening in Jackson, falling 2-1 to Belhaven.
Both teams battled torrential downpours throughout the match, hampering both teams' offensive efforts. Northwest dropped to 0-2 on the season with the loss.
After going the first 19 minutes without a goal scored, Belhaven finally broke the scoreless tie with a goal by Aleksander Harris, who received the pass from Jake Estes. That would be the only score of the first half for either team, as the Blazers took a 1-0 advantage into the locker room.
In the 52nd minute, freshman
Tre Castro provided the Rangers their first goal of the season, scoring off a free kick from
Koby Rhone and tying the match at 1-1.
However, Belhaven responded less than five minutes later, as Jacob Requilman connected with Estes on a goal from a corner kick. That would ultimately prove to be the winning score, despite the Rangers nearly tying the match with two more close shots.
Belhaven outmatched Northwest 19-6 in total shots, including 15 in the second half. The shots on-goal margin was much closer though, with the Blazers finishing 8-4 in that category.
Freshman goalkeeper
Connor Young played the whole match for the Rangers, notching six saves against two goals.Â
Next up for the Rangers is a road date at MUW on Monday, August 29 at 3 P.M.
