ALBUQUERQUE - Former Northwest safety Jerrick Reed II continues to impress at New Mexico, as the Olive Branch native was once again named to Athlon Sports' Preseason All-Mountain West team.
Reed was
one of only two Lobos selected for second team honors and the only member of UNM's defense to earn second team consideration. Several of his defensive counterparts received third or fourth team recognition by the publication, which is available on newsstands now.
Reed is no stranger to receiving awards and accolades at his Division I home. Prior to the 2021 season, he was named First Team All-Mountain West by Athlon Sports and garnered preseason All-Mountain West accolades from the conference itself. He was the first Lobo to be named preseason All-Mountain West in three years and the first New Mexico defensive back to earn preseason All-Mountain West since DeAndre Wright in 2008.
Following the 2021 season, Reed was selected as an Honorable Mention nod to Pro Football Focus' All-Mountain West team, after posting 54 total tackles, eight passes defended and one interception, which occurred in a 34-25 rivalry victory against New Mexico State in September. He earned 10 or more tackles in three games during his senior campaign, totaling a season and career-best 14 tackles in a loss to Air Force on October 2.
In his three seasons at New Mexico, Reed has racked up 173 tackles, 17 passes defended, six interceptions, four tackles-for-loss and a touchdown, which occurred on an interception in Lobos' debut against New Mexico State on September 21, 2019.
Reed lettered one year at Northwest in 2018 and was part of one of the nation's most dominant secondaries, sharing the field with numerous future Division I standouts, including recent New York Jets' draft pick Brandin Echols (Kentucky) and Louisville's Marlon Character, Jr., who signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021. Other notable members included former West Virginia safety Joshua Norwood, Malik Sanders (UMass/Mississippi State), Chris Stamps (Middle Tennessee) and South Alabama's Devin Rockette, who signed an undrafted free agent deal with the New York Jets back in April.
While helping Northwest to an 8-2 record and the first round of the MACJC Playoffs, Reed finished third among Ranger defenders with 71 tackles, three PBUs and two interceptions. He posted two games with 10 or more tackles, including a career-high 19 tackles in a loss to East Mississippi.
