AUSTIN, Texas - Three Northwest football student-athletes have been chosen to the 2022 Men's At-Large Academic All-America Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Tuesday.
Quarterback
Michael Hiers, linebacker
Sam Brumfield and wide receiver
Jacoby Jones were chosen for CoSIDA First Team Academic All-America honors, after sustaining 4.00 cumulative GPAs. Only seven student-athletes were selected for First Team consideration and only one other MACCC student-athlete accompanied the trio on the list (Jamarcus Smith - Northeast Mississippi Community College).
Hiers spent two seasons at Northwest, helping the Rangers to back-to-back MACCC titles and the 2020 National Community College Football Championship. The Birmingham, Ala. native and Samford University signee topped the national quarterback rankings for most of the 2021 season with a 71.4 completion percentage, while throwing for 21 touchdowns against four interceptions. He also concluded last season with 3,093 passing yards, joining Will Hall (3,982; 2000), Russell Evans (3,293; 1992) and Gardner Minshew (3,288; 2015) as only one of four Ranger quarterbacks to toss for 3,000 yards in a single season.
For his career, Hiers tossed 34 touchdowns against only five picks in nearly 500 pass attempts, while throwing for 4,519 passing yards to end his career with the fifth-most passing yards by any Northwest signal-caller. Off the field, he collected numerous academic honors and was a two-time nominee for the NJCAA's Lea Plarski Award.
Brumfield quietly rose to the top as the Rangers' leading tackler last season. The Pearl native accounted for 93 total tackles, including double-digit tackles in four games, highlighted by a 15-tackle effort in an early-season loss at Jones College. He also collected 7.5 tackles-for-loss, seven hurries, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble during the 2021 MACCC title run, capping off his Northwest career with 103 tackles.
In his three seasons at Northwest, Jones racked up a storied career as part of three playoff teams. The Tunica product accounted for 30 catches and 366 yards during the 2021 season and concluded his Ranger career with 56 receptions, 845 yards and four touchdowns among a crowded receiving corps. Jones earned several MACCC and NJCAA academic accolades off the field throughout his stint in Senatobia, while also garnering a nod to JCGridiron.com's 2020 Preseason Receiver Watch List.
CoSIDA's At-Large College Division includes two-year institutions, Canadian institutions and any United States four-year institutions that are not affiliated with the NCAA or NAIA. The three selections mark the Rangers' first CoSIDA Academic All-American since 2017.
