MARTIN, Tenn. - Northwest freshman
Riley Kate Lenagar continues to climb in the Ozark Region barrel racing standings, following her short-go championship in last weekend's UT Martin Rodeo.
After placing seventh in the Rangers' last event at Pearl River, the Brighton, Tenn. native took the championship short-go with a time of 13.56 seconds on Saturday night. She qualified for the championship after a solid ride on Friday evening, landing in a tie for fourth in the long-go. With her victory in the short-go, Lenagar finished second in the weekend average, just behind overall winner Katelyn Danzy of Arkansas-Monticello.
Overall, the Northwest women's team placed sixth out of nine teams, compiling 135 total points from Lenagar's victory. The Ranger men placed 10th over the weekend, mostly due to
Colby Burgess' third place finish in bull riding.
With the updated Ozark Region standings now released, Northwest sits in ninth place in both men's and women's competition. The Ranger men have 490 points on the season, while the Northwest women have compiled 235 team points, just behind eighth-place Mississippi State (295 points).
After last weekend's events, Burgess now sits in fourth place in the region bull riding standings with 280 points.
Cody Gilbert and Zachary Johnson are also within the top 10 at seventh and ninth, respectively.
As for Lenagar, she ranks fifth in the region barrel racing standings with 235 total points, just behind Danzy from UAM, who has 260 points on the season.
Next up for Northwest is the Boll Weevil Stampede, hosted by Arkansas-Monticello on April 21-23. The Rangers will then conclude the regular season in the annual Ranger Rodeo, set for April 28-30 in Senatobia. More details on the Ranger Rodeo can be found
