JACKSON - Three Northwest basketball student-athletes have been selected for all-conference honors, the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference announced on Tuesday morning.
Coach
Troy Howell's women's basketball squad netted two all-conference selections, with sophomore guardÂ
Tierra Trotter earning First Team All-MACCC accolades and sophomore forward
Kolten Blakeney collecting Second Team All-MACCC recognition. Forward
Isaiah Gaines earned Second Team All-MACCC honors and was the only men's player selected from Northwest.
A second team selection last season, Trotter once again led the Lady Rangers in scoring for the second consecutive season, averaging 16.3 points per game. The Bryant, Ark. native finished with nine 20-point games, including a career-best 29-point performance in an overtime victory at Pearl River during last month's MACCC Tournament. She also earned MACCC Player of the Week honors on February 15 after a pair of 24 and 16-point efforts against Mississippi Gulf Coast and Meridian.
For her career, Trotter finished with an average of 15.7 points per game, putting her seventh all-time in the Northwest record books. She also led the team in steals this season (43), while finishing second in total rebounds (155) and assists (68).
Trotter's selection also marks the first time a Lady Ranger has earned First Team All-MACCC honors since Sara Lytle in 2015-16.
Blakeney also earned Second Team All-MACCC honors last season and led the Lady Rangers in rebounds (196) and total blocks (18) this season. The Taylorsville native averaged a team-leading 7.8 rebounds per game and finished third in scoring, averaging 10.8 points per game.
Perhaps Blakeney's biggest highlight came in a January 24 victory against East Central, where she totaled 25 points and 24 rebounds to earn the program's first 20-20 game since 2017. She would go on to win MACCC Player of the Week honors for her performance, while also tying the Lady Rangers' single-game record for rebounds with Chatica Hathaway, who also posted 24 rebounds in a November 1995 matchup at Jackson State (Tenn.).
For her career, Blakeney collected 343 rebounds and 36 blocks, finishing eighth all-time in average rebounds (8.4 per game) and tying former Lady Ranger
Mallory Russell for 10th all-time in average blocks (0.9 per game).
On the men's side, Gaines earned Second Team All-MACCC honors after leading Northwest in total rebounds (223) and blocks (41). The Pensacola, Fla. native and FAU signee also averaged 13.6 points per game to finish second on the team in scoring, while also finishing second in assists with 50 for the season.
Gaines' best performance came in a double overtime victory at Copiah-Lincoln in the regular season finale, where he finished with 28 points and 17 rebounds. He also earned MACCC Player of the Week honors on January 11 and went viral for his full-court buzzer beater at Itawamba on January 31, a play that earned him a #SCTop10 nod on ESPN's SportsCenter.
Both Northwest teams earned appearances into the MACCC and Region 23 playoffs this season, with the Lady Rangers finishing 15-11 overall for the second winning season in Howell's three-year tenure. On the men's side, coach
Shane Oakley guided the Rangers to an 18-7 overall record for his third winning season in the last four years.
