Box Score SUMMIT - A 23-point performance from Southwest Mississippi's Shylia McGee made the biggest difference in a 69-58 Northwest loss on Monday evening.
With the loss, the Lady Rangers saw its five-game winning streak snapped, as the team dropped to 14-8 overall and 8-5 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Lady Bears jumped to 16-7 on the season and 8-3 in the MACCC.
Northwest led the Lady Bears by four at the end of the first period, but Southwest Mississippi outscored the Lady Rangers 20-14 in the second quarter to hold a slim 36-34 halftime advantage.
Although Northwest stayed within striking distance for most of the second half, the Lady Bears slowly began to widen the gap as the game progressed. Southwest Mississippi led 53-47 at the end of the third period and closed out the final 10 minutes with a 16-11 scoring advantage, ending the evening by handing the Lady Rangers the 11-point loss.
I'Yana Ragin led the Lady Rangers with 17 points, followed by 16 from
Kolten Blakeney. Behind McGee's game-high performance, Lynn Griffin also scored 11 for the Lady Bears, while Gabby Bunch and Nia Hardison finished with 10 apiece.
Northwest is now one of four teams locked in a tie for the fifth place spot in the latest conference standings, joining Copiah-Lincoln, East Mississippi and Itawamba. The Lady Rangers will host Co-Lin for Thursday's regular season finale, with action scheduled to tipoff at 5:30 P.M.
