JACKSON - After a historic performance during last week's Sophomore Night against East Central, there was little doubt that a conference Player of the Week award was in store for
Kolten Blakeney.
That theory was confirmed on Tuesday morning, as the Taylorsville native was officially voted as the league's Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
Blakeney earned this week's honor in large part due to her 25-point, 24-rebound effort in last Monday's victory against East Central. Not only did both totals set new career highs for Blakeney, but she also became the first Northwest Lady Ranger to finish with a 20-20 game since Tamaria Thomas scored 23 points and 21 rebounds in a November 2017 loss at ASU Mid-South.
Additionally, Blakeney's 24 rebounds tied the program's single-game record, joining only Chatica Hathaway at the top of the record books. Hathaway notched her 24 rebounds in a November 1995 matchup at Jackson State (Tenn.).
Though she didn't match those numbers in last Thursday's road win at Hinds, Blakeney still notched eight points and five boards, helping Northwest to last week's clean sweep. Currently, the Lady Rangers stand at 12-7 on the season and 6-4 against MACCC competition, good for sole possession of sixth place in the conference standings.
Now winners of three straight games, Northwest will look to continue its hot streak on Thursday, February 3 at Meridian. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 P.M. on mcceagles.live.
