MAGNOLIA, Ark. - For the first time all season, both Northwest teams came away with points over the weekend at Southern Arkansas University, the second to last stop in the NIRA's Ozark Region fall schedule.
Northwest compiled 220 points for a sixth place men's finish, beating out event host SAU and Three Rivers College, while the Lady Rangers got 35 total points for an eighth place result.
A pair of runner-up results highlighted the men's weekend, as Colby Burgess was one of only two bull riders to place. The Houlka native came away with 53 points, trailing only event-winner Luke Stanley (East Mississippi), who earned 59 points. Additionally, David Holt collected 22.7 points in tie down roping, finishing 0.5 points behind overall winner Caleb Moore (East Mississippi).
For the Lady Rangers, freshman Darby Toole finished in a three-way tie for fifth in breakaway roping, joining Sorryl Lei Cannon (West Alabama) and Megan Claire Hotard (Arkansas-Monticello) with 3.2 points.
Factoring in the results from this past weekend, both Northwest teams are sitting in eighth place in the latest Ozark Region standings. The Lady Rangers have 225 total points, trailing East Mississippi by just five, while the Ranger men have 250 points, leading Three Rivers College, Arkansas-Monticello and Auburn.
Individually, Burgess sits in fifth of the season's bull riding standings with 100 points, while Holt also ranks fifth with 150 points in the tie down roping standings. Toole is currently sixth in the barrel racing standings with 110 points, while Riley Kate Lenagar is 11th out of 15 barrel racers with 80 total points.
Northwest will conclude the fall half of the 2022-23 season at Murray State University from November 17-19.
