SENATOBIA - Despite going toe-to-toe with a nationally-ranked Copiah-Lincoln squad, Northwest fell victim to a late first half goal and a penalty kick in the second half that helped the visiting Wolves to a 2-0 victory on Friday afternoon.
Copiah-Lincoln fired off a flurry of shots throughout the first half, but the Rangers successfully kept the Wolves off the board, thanks to the efforts of goalkeeper
Connor Young. The freshman collected eight of his 13 saves in the first half, but Cooper Madison snuck one by him with two seconds remaining before halftime, sending Northwest to the locker room down 1-0.
Both teams battled throughout the second half in a physical showdown, but a penalty kick from Alfie Lally in the 56th minute helped make the difference for the Wolves. Copiah-Lincoln outshot Northwest 32-9 throughout the match, including a 15-3 shots on-goal advantage.
A total of 32 fouls were whistled between both teams, with the Rangers receiving five yellow cards. The Wolves were hit with two infractions, both coming in the first half.
With the loss, Northwest fell to 1-11 on the season and remained winless in the MACCC at 0-8. Meanwhile, the Wolves jumped to 9-1-2 overall and 6-0-1 in conference play. The Rangers will host Meridian on Tuesday, October 18 and Itawamba on Friday, October 21 for the final two matches of the season.
