Second Half Surge Lifts Northwest Past Holmes

RIDGELAND - Trailing 1-0 midway through the second half of a physical contest at Holmes, Northwest staged a successful rally behind a pair of goals from Peyton Coker and Koby Rhone, winning 2-1 on Friday afternoon.

With the win, Northwest grabbed its second MACCC North Division win to improve to 2-2 and 2-6 on the season. Holmes dropped to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in division play.

Both teams kept up an intense defensive battle throughout the contest, as both teams struggled to find the back of the net. For Holmes, the Bulldogs delivered the first blow in the 26th minute as Layton Levingston and Bienvenue Sunzu teamed up to find Kagoma Egide for a 1-0 halftime lead.

As the offensive momentum began to shift in favor of the Rangers, Blaine Galbraith connected with Peyton Coker in the 67th minute to tie the match.

As the tug-of-war continued late into the second half, the Rangers said no to overtime, as Jesus Villegas found Koby Rhone in front of the net for the game-winner in the 88th minute.

Both teams finished near even in the shot column, with Northwest earning a 17-16 advantage and a 10-8 favor in shots on goal. Holmes also edged Northwest in total fouls, 14-12.

Northwest will enjoy a week off from action, returning to play on Friday, October 1 at Copiah-Lincoln. The non-division match is slated for a 3 P.M. start time in Wesson.
